What Is Acura Super Handling All-Wheel Drive?
Acura Super Handling All-Wheel Drive, also known as SH-AWD, is a high-tech all-wheel drive system designed to maximize power output and efficiency. By analyzing driving conditions, SH-AWD can shift power between wheels, increasing traction and performance across a wide range of surfaces. This advanced all-wheel drive system is exclusive to Acura, and is now available with a wide range of new vehicles.
In a standard all-wheel drive system, as seen on many new cars today, the power output, or bias, is typically fixed. This means that the front and rear wheels are constantly operating at a fixed ratio. While this does increase traction over a two-wheel drive vehicle, it cannot account for changes in road conditions or driving style. With the Acura SH-AWD system, wheel sensors detect for slippage, and use torque vectoring to send power to wheels with the most traction. With this high-tech AWD system, both the left and right rear wheels can be independently powered to maximize grip and control. Best of all, the system can direct power to the front wheels while cruising, increasing passenger comfort and fuel efficiency.
Sport Hybrid SH-AWD
Building off of the proven Acura Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system, Acura has since created a new bespoke system for hybrid-electric vehicles, including the new Acura NSX. This cutting-edge system, Sport Hybrid SH-AWD, combines a traditional gasoline engine with electric motors to create an all-wheel system. By replacing the traditional driveshaft and differential with electric motors, the system can deliver torque almost instantly wherever it is needed. This combination not only increases traction and driver safety, but makes for thrilling performance, too.
